Where the Saddle Meets the Sea.
Costa Rica’s working cowboy and one of the last wild surf coasts in the Americas, on one oceanfront property. Every system that runs it is Mystic: solar power, water, factory-built homes. All of it sits behind a rustic charm you’d never guess was engineered.
Costa Rica has a cowboy, and almost nobody outside Costa Rica knows it. The sabanero is the country’s working horseman, with centuries of history on the haciendas of the Pacific slope. His partner tradition, the boyero oxcart culture, is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. And Costa Rican rodeo is famously bloodless: the bull always walks away.
Across the property line is the Pacific: uncrowded surf, whale channels and beaches where sea turtles still nest. The Sabanero Surf Club joins the two worlds. Nothing here is an imported theme. Everything is rooted in something Costa Rica already is.
With energy and water, everything else is imaginable.
The property sits on Mystic-owned oceanfront near Ocean Breeze, our operating energy site. Corcovado National Park anchors the peninsula. Scarlet macaws, four species of monkey and humpback whales are part of the daily view, and the Osa microclimate stays green all year.
The daily heartbeat: surf school and board house, beach bar and grill, and the boat launch for whale and dolphin trips, dive and fishing charters. Beginner breaks are right off the sand, with boat access to the point breaks.
A working stable with a rescue corral. The club’s signature moment lives here: the sunrise low-tide ride along the beach. Trail rides cross the forested interior.
An open-air arena, open to the public. Saturday nights belong to the Fiesta Sabanera: bloodless Costa Rican rodeo, trick riding, marimba and a boyero oxcart parade. By day, a farmers’ market for the whole peninsula.
Surf Shacks for the boards-and-bonfires crowd, ranch cabins in the middle, and Estancia Villas with private infinity pools facing the whale channel. Every unit stands on the same Mystic construction. The tiers differ in size and privacy, never in quality.
The heart of the property: a protected nesting beach for olive ridley and green turtles, a hatchery, guest-attended hatchling releases, mangrove kayak trails and a scarlet macaw tower.
Every great resort has a face. Ours belongs to the founder’s dog, who runs the welcome committee from the Surf Shack porches.

The Sabanero Surf Club showcases everything Mystic does, all running in one place. The technology works quietly behind timber, thatch and lantern light, so guests notice the macaws and not the machinery.
A solar microgrid with Mystic’s Energy in a Box™ storage runs the resort, the arena stage and, in time, electric aircraft. No waiting on the grid, and no outages at dinner.
Rainwater capture plus Mystic’s Water in a Box™ produce clean drinking water on site, running on the same solar power.
Factory-crafted galvanized-steel frames with AstroShield™ glazing, raised on pier footings with no concrete on the beach. Construction leaves the canopy standing and follows the land’s natural drainage.
Satellite connectivity, Mystic OS smart controls and dark-sky lighting. Everything is there when you want it and hidden when you don’t.
Gentle whitewater for first-timers, boat access to serious point breaks, a resident pro, and dawn patrol every morning.
Ranch-to-table and sea-to-table. The morning catch comes in by boat, produce comes from the property’s gardens, and Saturday’s open-fire sabanero cooking is a show of its own.
Sound baths set to the surf, yoga decks in the canopy, and the kind of quiet that turns a four-night surf trip into a two-week retreat.
A remote, beautiful, fully private property that handles its own arrivals. Book the whole club for a weekend.
On the Osa, conservation is how a community decides whether a development deserves to exist. A rodeo and a turtle sanctuary can share a property only if the coexistence is designed in from the first sketch, and here it is.
Today
A short regional flight from San José to Puerto Jiménez, a boat up the Sierpe river, or the Costanera highway for travellers who’d rather drive. Our concierge handles the whole journey.
Tomorrow Vision
Electric sea gliders landing off the beach, electric aircraft on an on-property pad, and cargo drones for supplies. All of it charged by the club’s own solar microgrid the moment these aircraft are certified to fly.
Caño Island’s reefs, with turtles, rays and white-tip sharks, are a short boat ride away. Further out, Mystic’s long-range vision for Cocos Island, pursued with Costa Rica’s park authorities, is to turn a day-and-a-half crossing into a morning flight.
An annual coastal country music festival in La Arena: sand, saltwater and a cowboy hat, on a stage powered by the Mystic microgrid. The Saturday Fiesta builds the tradition week by week until then.
Ranchwear, hats and hand-shaped, bull-horned longboards at the property entrance. At the live forge, guests watch the Triple-S brand seared into their leather goods.
Some guests won’t want to leave. The Surf Club is the front door to Mystic’s Costa Rica communities: a vacation becomes a trial residency, and a trial residency becomes a home.
The Sabanero Surf Club is in planning. Join the founding list for first word on opening dates, founding-guest stays, weddings and events, and life in Mystic’s Costa Rica communities.
